Atari Revives The Classic 2600 Console For Modern TVs

Atari is back with an intriguing revival of its original Atari 2600 console, aiming to tug at the heartstrings of nostalgic gamers. This new rendition, called the Atari 2600+, stands out as the most faithful recreation since its 1977 debut, boasting meticulous attention to detail, down to the iconic toggles like Power and Game Reset. The console is now slightly smaller but packs the same “retro charm,” even catering to gamers’ stockpile of old cartridges gathering dust.

Collaborating with European game developer PLAION, Atari has conjured the Atari 2600+, a marvel that doesn’t just look the part but plays the part too. This modern iteration resurrects the vintage feel by accommodating classic Atari 2600 cartridges and the later 7800 releases. The best part is that it’s compatible with modern TVs (via HDMI output) and offers widescreen support.

The console boasts a few modern touches, featuring a USB power outlet and the choice of multiple screen resolutions. Bundled with a single CX40+ joystick controller and a cartridge hosting 10 games (including timeless titles like Adventure and Missile Command).

Contrasting its earlier attempt, the streaming-centric Atari VCS, the legacy game-maker delivers a visual resemblance and an authentic “feel” reminiscent of the 1980s. The console’s heartbeat lies in its Rockchip 3128 SOC, complemented by 256MB of DDR3 RAM and internal storage.

Though this revival offers fewer control options than its predecessor, there’s an available port for additional controllers, while separate CX40+ and CX-30 paddle controllers can be purchased. Attractive launch titles like Mr. Run and Jump and Berzerk Enhanced Edition are also available individually.

Availability and Price

Preorders are live here, and the console is slated to launch on November 17th for $130. The Atari 2600+ Video Game System package includes an Atari 2600+ Game System, Atari CX40+ Joystick, Atari 10-in-1 Game Cartridge, HDMI Cable, and a USB-C Power Cable.
